Question of the Week: Harry Potter movies

January 24, 2011

This week’s questions stems from my weekend marathon of Harry Potter movies.  I’m a big fan of Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings.  Both series have a lot of detail in the books.  But the Lord of the Rings movies were all two hours or longer, while the Harry Potter movies were mostly shorter than two hours, which left out a lot of details.  So my question this week is:

Would the Potter movies have been better if lengthened or divided into parts?

I’m going to be the odd one out here and say that both Harry Potter and LOTR movie series are waaay too long. I guess the LOTR movies mean more to people who loved the books and is familiar with the mythology and everything. Having not read the books myself, I fail to be interested in the significance of certain minor characters or subplots here and there.

Regarding Harry Potter, (and here comes the unpopular opinion) I feel it would have been better if they just made the whole saga into one trilogy. (Yes, a TRILOGY.) The first movie showing how he joins the wizard school, the second movie is about the death of Dumbledore, and the third movie is the final confrontation of Harry and Voldemort. Again, I haven’t read the Potter books, so I don’t get all the mini stories lying around that drags out to 8 whole movies.

Just to be clear, I am not bashing the Harry Potter or LOTR movies, in fact I like them a lot! 🙂 I’m just suggesting that the movies could have been more precise and perhaps more distinctive. (I have to think for a minute if you ask me what happened in “Goblet of Fire”, or in which LOTR did they fight the giant spider. Hmm.

I agree that the Harry Potter movies could have been more precise. I think that they’re good but not great. The directors took a great deal of liberty with the original material that fans often don’t agree with–though some changes are acceptable (I don’t hear anyone complaining about the fact that Hermione is more stylish in the movies than the books).

At least you know your opinion is the minority! Nothing wrong with having the unpopular opinion, thanks for commenting! I highly disagree that the HP movies should have been a trilogy. Already there is a lot missing from the movies, making the books into only 3 movies would have been not only highly unpopular but also skipping over so much necessary information. I would have loved for the HP movies to be longer and closer to the books, or in the case of the first two movies, just better done. But I am a huge fan and I’ve read the books A LOT. Same with Lord of the Rings, though I’m the first to admit the books and movies are not for everyone.

Probably the question simply comes down to whether you’re a mild fan, a huge fan, or not a fan at all!
